Day 282 – Psalm 86

“For great is Your mercy toward me…” Psalm 86:13a

FINDING MOTIVATION TO PRAISE GOD

Motivation is needed for just about everything that is worth doing. David thought that it would be a worthwhile goal to praise and glorify God’s name forever and ever. But he knew also that he would have to find strong motivation to be able to accomplish this lofty spiritual goal.

“For great is Your mercy toward me,
And You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.”
Psalm 86:13

1. “For great is Your mercy toward me”

a) The particle “for” suggests
i) Contemplation
ii) Appreciation
b) Meditation on the great mercy of God bestowed
i) David was conscious of his need for God’s abundant mercy (Psalm 86:5b).
ii) He pleaded for that mercy to be extended to him (Psalm 86:3a).
iii) He had experienced God’s great mercy.
c) Motivation to praise God
i) There was now fresh motivation to praise God and glorify Him.
ii) Any experience of God’s mercy ought to result in motivation to glorify Him.

2. “And You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol”

a) “The depths of Sheol” represented a number of things:-
i) Death
ii) The grave
iii) Judgment by God
b) God had delivered David from the depths of Sheol.

A powerful experience of being delivered from death should cause one to praise God. David had, on more than one occasion, experienced Divine deliverance from death. He determined that these experiences should cause him to be deeply motivated to praise God and glorify Him.
