Day 298 – Psalm 88

“O LORD, God of my salvation…” Psalm 88:1a

CONTEMPLATING GOD

The superscription gives us an idea as to the way we should read the psalm. Heman sang this song meditatively, contemplating God even as he ministered.

“O LORD, God of my salvation,
I have cried out day and night before You.”
Psalm 88:1

1. “O LORD”

a) This was the usual way in which God was addressed.
b) How does contemplation affect the way in which this word was employed?
i) There would be a great sense of history.
ii) There would be a precious sense of antiquity.
iii) There would be a profound sense of theology.

2. “God of my salvation”

a) Many psalmists came up with their own way of describing God.
i) Asaph’s title for God- “The Most High” (Psalm 82:6; 83:18b)
ii) Solomon’s title for God- “The LORD God, the God of Israel” (Psalm 72:18)
b) The sons of Korah
i) General reference to the sons of Korah- “O God of our salvation” (Psalm 85:4a)
ii) Heman the Ezrahite- “God of my salvation” (Psalm 88:1a)

3. “I have cried out day and night before You”

a) A reference to prayer.
b) This may well described the ministry of the sons of Korah.
c) They sang before God in prayer.
d) Day and night they sang their prayers to God.
e) Heman’s prayer was not just perfunctory, it was also personal.
