Day 303 – Psalm 88

“You have laid me in the lowest pit…” Psalm 88:6a

STRUGGLES IN UNDERSTANDING GOD

It is always difficult for the finite to comprehend the infinite. It is even more challenging to understand why God would allow such suffering to be endured. In such circumstances, we can understand the volatility of emotions that are found in the following text.

“You have laid me in the lowest pit,
In darkness, in the depths.”
Psalm 88:6

1. “In the lowest pit”

a) This is not a physical reference.
b) Heman was not thrown into a mass grave.
c) This was a figure of speech.

2. “In darkness”

a) This was another figure of speech.
b) Heman could not see light at the end of the tunnel.
c) The tunnel he was in seemed interminably long and dark.

3. “In the depths”

a) A third figure of speech employed.
b) This time it was a nautical expression.

4. “You have laid me”

a) This was by far the most difficult part.
b) Heman had believed in the Lord.
c) He was the God of his salvation.
d) He prayed day and night faithfully.
e) Why had God laid him in the lowest pit?

Heman struggled greatly with these dark and morbid thoughts! He must cling fast to his faith in God or be swallowed up by despair! The best thing was to find a song in the night to sing to God.
