Day 304 – Psalm 88

“Your wrath lies heavy upon me…” Psalm 88:7a

THE WRATH OF GOD

This was another subject for contemplation. It was just as difficult to ponder the subject of God’s wrath.

“Your wrath lies heavy upon me,
And You have afflicted me with all Your waves.”
Psalm 88:7

BORROWING OF IMAGERY

It is not uncommon to borrow imagery. Heman seems to have drawn an analogy from the story of the prophet Jonah.

1. “Your wrath lies heavy upon me”

a) Heman remembered how God was angry with Jonah.
b) God’s anger towards Israel was revealed from time to time.
i) In the days of Moses.
ii) In the days of the Judges.
iii) In the days of the wicked and unjust kings.
c) God’s wrath was felt by all.
i) By the wicked kings;
ii) By the nation; and
iii) By those who served the Lord (The Levites etc).

2. “And You have afflicted me with all Your waves”

a) Jonah was caught in a storm (Jonah 1).
b) He was swallowed up by a great fish (Jonah 2).
c) He was greatly afflicted indeed.

3. Drawing strength through recall

a) Heman recalled past history.
b) As Jonah found reprieve so he hoped that he would find some measure of relief from wrath.
