Day 321 – Psalm 89

“For who in the heavens can be compared to the LORD?” Psalm 89:6a

A FAVOURITE APPROACH

The use of rhetorical questions seems to be a favourite approach taken by the Biblical writers. Ethan was not alone when he used this approach in the following text.

“For who in the heavens can be compared to the LORD?
Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the LORD?”
Psalm 89:6

1. Two significant writers employed this approach:-

a) Moses used rhetorical questions.

“Who is like You, O LORD, among the gods?
Who is like You, glorious in holiness,
Fearful in praises, doing wonders?”
Exodus 15:11

b) The prophet Micah used rhetorical questions.

“Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity
And passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage?”
Micah 7:18a-b

2. “Who in the heavens can be compared to the LORD?”

a) The mighty angels?
b) The answer is so obvious! No one can be compared to the LORD!

3. “Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the LORD?”

a) Conquering Joshua?
b) Mighty Samson?
c) David the giant slayer?
d) The answer is again obvious! No one can be compared to the LORD!

GOD HIMSELF TOOK THIS APPROACH

We are reminded of the fact that God Himself took this same approach. Let us stand in awe of the greatness of God and in humility offer hymns of praise in awe.

“To whom then will you liken God?
Or what likeness will you compare to Him?”
Isaiah 40:18

“‘To whom then will you liken Me,
Or to whom shall I be equal?’
Says the Holy One.”
Isaiah 40:25
