Day 353 – Psalm 89

“But You have cast off and abhorred…” Psalm 89:38a

A SHARP CONTRAST

The psalmist Ethan the Ezrahite took a sharp turn in the latter segment of Psalm 89. The latter part of this psalm sees Ethan expressing deep pain and sorrow as he ponders the plight of Israel in his days.

“But You have cast off and abhorred,
You have been furious with Your anointed.”
Psalm 89:38

1. Strong allegations that God had done the following:-

a) Cast off
b) Abhorred
c) Furious with His anointed (the king)

2. How did Ethan make such a turn-around?

Several things must be considered:-

a) The historical perspective
i) The kingdom of Judah was undergoing turbulent times
ii) God’s blessings had not been bestowed on the kingdom
iii) There was no solution in sight
b) The personal perspective
i) Ethan suffered together with all of Judah
ii) The intensity of suffering caused grave doubts to arise
iii) Out of anguish he wrote (spoke) as he did
c) The theological-spiritual perspective
i) Ethan failed to apply what he had written about God chastening the errant sons of David (Psalm 89:30-31)
ii) He did not discern the Messianic element of Psalm 89:29, 36
iii) He could not distinguish the Messianic Seed from the sons of David
