Day 364 – Psalm 89

“Lord, where are Your former lovingkindnesses…?” Psalm 89:49a

PLEADING THE LOVINGKINDNESS OF GOD

As Ethan humbled himself before God and supplicated, he was drawn to plead with deeper humility. The way to get God to hear and answer prayer did not lie in making wild allegations against Him! Ethan learned to plead with the Lord to grant mercy and favour once again.

“Lord, where are Your former lovingkindnesses,
Which You swore to David in Your truth?”
Psalm 89:49

1. “Lord”

a) “You” was the pronoun used in the previous verses (Psalm 89:38-45).
b) Now, it was an appropriate “Lord” (Psalm 89:46, 49, 50).

2. Pleading the “former lovingkindnesses”

a) What does the word “lovingkindness” encompass?
Three aspects may be highlighted:-
i) Mercies Psalm 89:1a
ii) Faithfulness Psalm 89:1b
iii) Favour Psalm 89:17b
b) These are:-
i) Attributes of God.
ii) They form the foundation of the Davidic covenant.
ii) It was correct that Ethan the Ezrahite plead the lovingkindness of God.

3. “Which You swore to David in Your truth?”

a) The lovingkindness was indeed promised to David and his descendants (Psalm 89:33a).
b) God did promise that He would not break the Davidic covenant (Psalm 89:34a).
c) He solemnly made an oath to David (Psalm 89:35).
d) Ethan now pleaded with the Lord to fulfill His promise.
e) Ethan must now exercise his faith in the Lord that He would keep His word!
