Day 5 – Psalm 90

“Like grass which grows up.” Psalm 90:5c

MULTIPLE IMAGERY

Moses was so taken up with the fragility of life that he employed multiple imagery to describe how frail man really is.

“You carry them away like a flood;
They are like a sleep.
In the morning they are like grass which grows up:
In the morning it flourishes and grows up;
In the evening it is cut down and withers.”
Psalm 90:5-6

1. “You carry them away like a flood”

a) Floods are powerful.
b) They carry away everything in their path.

2. “They are like a sleep”

a) A good sleep may last up to eight hours.
b) But all too soon one must awaken from sleep.
c) Life, like sleep, is very short.

3. “Like grass”

a) The growth of grass is used as an illustration.
b) Grass, unlike trees, grows very quickly.
c) Its rapid growth is likened to “morning… evening”.
i) Grass grows quickly.
ii) It flourishes within a short space of time.
iii) All too soon, it is ready to be cut down.
iv) Grass withers quickly too.

STANDING IN AWE OF GOD

Moses had learned to stand in awe of God. The greatness of God completely dwarfs mankind. The frail and puny human being would be well advised to give due reverence to God!
