Day 13 – Psalm 91

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High…” Psalm 91:1a

AN UNKNOWN AUTHOR

There are some psalms whose authors are unknown to us. Psalms 1 and 2 were written by unknown authors. (However, in Acts 4:25, the apostle Peter made reference to David as the author of Psalm 2.) The authors would most likely be known to the compilers of the psalms. However, along the way it is possible, in the transmission of the written texts, the names of some of the authors somehow went missing. It is important to note that the loss of the names of the authors does not detract from the significance of the contents of the psalms. (Psalms 91-100 is a cluster where the authors are unnamed.)

GOD AS OUR DWELLING PLACE

Moses wrote of God as the dwelling place of Israel (Psalm 90:1). Psalm 91 expands the thought of God as our dwelling place.

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
Psalm 91:1

1. “The secret place of the Most High”

a) It is certainly not a physical location.
b) It must refer to Zion (Psalm 48:12).
i) It is God’s “house” where His glory dwells (Psalm 26:8).
ii) It is also called “the city of God” (Psalm 46:4a; Psalm 48:1-3).
ii) It is further called “the holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High” (Psalm 46:4b).

2. “Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty”

a) It is described as “a secret place” by David (Psalm 27:5b).
b) He also called it by the following terms:-
i) The house of the LORD Psalm 27:4b
ii) His temple Psalm 27:4c
iii) His pavilion Psalm 27:5a
iv) His tabernacle Psalm 27:5b
c) It is the very presence of God Himself (Psalm 31:20a).
d) It is where the Almighty covers His people “under the shadow of His wings” (Psalm 17:8b).
