Day 14 – Psalm 91

“He is my refuge and my fortress…” Psalm 91:2a

THE LORD AS OUR REFUGE

What does it mean to dwell in the Presence of God? The psalmist personally declares that he has made God his place of refuge. (The language employed in Psalm 91 is very similar to King David. Either this psalm was written by David or by one who has been heavily influenced by David’s writings).

“I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.'”
Psalm 91:2

1. “I will say of the LORD”

a) This is a personal declaration of the psalmist.
b) It is likely a public declaration of his faith in God.

2. “He is my refuge and my fortress”

a) This explains the earlier expression “the secret place of the Most High”.
b) Refuge
i) A place where one may find safety.
ii) A place where one may resort to when under attack by deadly enemies.
c) Fortress
i) There is complete safety in the Lord.
ii) He may indeed be compared to a fortress (Psalm 18:1-2).

3. “He is… my God”

a) David avows only the Lord as His God.
b) He has never sat with “idolatrous mortals” (Psalm 26:4a).

4. “In Him I will trust”

a) Declaration of faith in God must lead to actual practice of trust in Him.
b) Trust in God must be practised faithfully at all times.
c) Trust in God is something that God desires and expects.
