Day 58 – Psalm 96

“Honour and majesty are before Him…” Psalm 96:6a

DEEPENING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF WORSHIP

The psalmist was deeply committed to helping people deepen their understanding of worship. Thus he penned the following text.

“Honour and majesty are before Him;
Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.
Give to the LORD, O families of the peoples,
Give to the LORD glory and strength.
Give to the LORD the glory due His name;
Bring an offering, and come into His courts.”
Psalm 96:6-8

1. “Into His courts”

a) The psalmist apparently had the tabernacle or the temple in mind.
b) The “courts” would represent the entrance section of the sanctuary of God.

2. Consciousness of who God is

a) He is full of honour.
b) He is also full of majesty.

3. “Give to the LORD”

a) This is a call to “give ascription” to God.
b) Two things ought to be ascribed to God:-
i) Glory
ii) Strength
c) These are truly “due” to God.
i) Our minds must recognize that to the Lord belong glory and strength.
ii) Our hearts must resonate with this understanding.

4. “Bring an offering”

The patriarchs of old set brilliant examples. King David declared that he would never give an offering that costs him nothing (2 Samuel 24:24). The offering should be given out of a willing heart (Exodus 25:2).
