“The LORD has made known His salvation…” Psalm 98:2a

THE SALVATION OF GOD

The word “salvation” has a special connotation in the Book of Psalms. In many instances this word has the idea of “deliverance”.

“The LORD has made known His salvation;
His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness
to the house of Israel;
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.”
Psalm 98:2-3

1. “The LORD has made known His salvation”

a) This “salvation” is best understood in the light of the word “victory” (Psalm 98:1).
b) The Lord had saved (“delivered”) Israel from falling victim to hostile nations.
i) God delivered (“saved”) Israel from the Egyptian.
ii) He also saved them from the Assyrians.
iii) He further delivered them from the Babylonians.

2. What was revealed to the nations (and of course Israel)?

a) God’s righteousness
b) God’s mercy
c) God’s faithfulness

3. In what way did these features stand out?

a) Israel’s helpless and hopeless estate.
i) There was no way in which Israel could have saved itself.
ii) The nation would have been annihilated without God’s salvation.
b) Israel’s sinfulness.
i) Israel did not merit God’s salvation.
ii) What God did for the nation was entirely out of mercy.

God was faithful to Israel despite the nation’s unfaithfulness.
