SOUND ADVICE ON HOW TO UTILISE OUR GIFTS

Let us ponder the very practical and sound advice given by the apostle Paul concerning the utilization of our spiritual gifts:-

1. Different Gifts (Romans 12:6)

We begin here. God, in His wisdom and grace, has given to the Church, different gifts.

2. Using the gifts (Romans 12:6-8)

We must understand that God meant us to use our gifts. The implications are so obvious.

3. Recognising our gifts

a) The gift of “Ministry” (Romans 12:7a)
i) This word “ministry” (diakonian) may refer to the humble task of serving at tables.
ii) It is also a word that is used to describe the work of “deacons”.
iii) In both applications, we must apply ourselves to serving humbly and diligently!
iv) The idea of being “in ministry” was widely employed to even cover the work of serving the Lord as an apostle (Cf. Romans 11:13).
b) The gift of “Teaching” (Romans 12:7b)
i) This word (didaskon) describes the gift of the teaching ministry.
ii) Teaching was associated with the pastoral ministry (Cf. Ephesians 4:12)
iii) Teaching was a gift that came with tremendous responsibility.

A QUICK SUMMARY OF THE IDEA OF GIFTS

Three things may be highlighted:-

1. Gifts are “gifted people” (Prophets, apostles, evangelists, pastors-teachers)

2. Gifts include “the office” of these servants of God.

3. Gifts are special “talents” that God endows an individual with.
