"If your brother is grieved because of your food..."

Text: Romans 14:15

MANY CHALLENGES

There are many challenges to the sincere and ardent believer of Christ.

1. Basic Challenges

Paul worked very hard at helping believers to arrive at a mature faith in Christ! We may summarise:

a) All need to have a good understanding of the basics of the Christian faith (Romans 1-8)
b) It would also be important to have a good understanding of God’s regard and will with reference to Israel (Romans 9-11)

2. Advanced Challenges

Paul also sought to offer more advance challenges to believers:-

a) All believers should dedicate themselves to serving the Lord (Romans 12)
b) They also ought to have a Biblical perspective of political rulers of the land
(Romans 13)
c) They also must take one step further to be sensitive to brethren who are weaker
(Romans 14)

A SPECIAL APPEAL

Paul was a tremendous example of one who possessed a powerful faith and mindset. With these he was able to overcome his religious scruples that he had grown up with, being a Pharisee (Cf. Philippians 3:5; Acts 23:6; 26:5).

However, he knew that many struggled in their faith. Not everybody knew how to appreciate the liberty that came with faith in the Lord Jesus (Cf. Galatians 5:1). Many were still trapped by consciences that were unschooled in faith in Christ. A special appeal was sent out to all believers.

“Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food,
you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food
the one for whom Christ died.”
Romans 14:15

1. If your brother

There must be greater sense of regard for a fellow believer. He is a “brother.”

2. The one for whom Christ died

This was an even stronger appeal to show sensitivity to weaker brethren. The strong are urged to think of Christ in their regard for the weaker brethren!
