"All things indeed are pure..."

Text: Romans 14:20

A STRONG AND HEALTHY MINDSET

Paul was all set for believers to have a strong and healthy mindset. This mindset would allow believers to hold this correct regard.

“All things indeed are pure…”
Romans 14:20b

This was not just a position that Paul held because he was God’s special apostle to the Gentiles. It was also a position that the apostle Peter was taught.

PETER’S EXPERIENCE

The apostle Peter was one of the leading apostles of the Lord Jesus! Being brought up as a Jew, he had carefully kept the Jewish dietary laws carefully. In a heavenly vision given to him, Peter saw:

“All kinds of four-footed animals of the earth,
wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air.”
Acts 10:12

As Peter gazed at this vision given to him, he heard a voice, saying,

“Rise, Peter, kill and eat.”
Acts 10:13

Peter was aghast at this command, and protested.

“Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything
common or unclean.”
Acts 10:14

A CLEAR AND STRONG WORD FROM THE LORD

God knew how much Peter had to struggle in his heart and mind. Indeed, he had been a good Jew practising the Mosaic dietary laws. But Peter had to learn that a new dispensation had come to pass. He had to learn that in the New Covenant, what he had learned previously had to be changed.

“And a voice spoke to him again the second time,
‘What God has cleansed you must not call common.'”
Acts 10:15

1. There were no dietary laws in the New Covenant.

2. Nothing in itself was unclean or common.

3. All things were edible.

4. All things were pure.

A SAD REALITY

To the person who is weak, this new teaching was hard to comprehend and accept. To the believer, the old laws remained deeply ensconced in his heart and mind.

“It is evil for the man who eats with offense.”
Romans 14:20b
