ATTACKS ON THE CHURCH OF CHRIST

That there would be attacks on the Church of Christ should not come as a surprise! Some reasons for such attacks may be appended below:-

1. Spiritual warfare

Paul wrote strongly to teach believers about the grim reality of spiritual warfare (Cf. Ephesians 6)! To ignore this reality would place both the individual and the Church in grave danger.

2. Sinful human elements

a) Some may be incensed against Christianity because of strong ideological differences (Cf. Acts 16:20-21; 21:28).

b) Others may be upset with the success of a strongly vibrant Christian faith (Cf. Acts 13:45)

FORMS OF ATTACKS AGAINST THE CHURCH

Various forms of attacks were launched against the Church! Three may be highlighted:-

1. Persecution of the Church (External) – Acts 8:1

2. Penetration of the Church by false brethren (Internal) – Galatians 2:4

3. Powerful evil doctrinal influences- Colossians 2

DEFENCE OF THE CHURCH

How may the church defend itself against these attacks? One suggestion is offered in the following text.

“Note those who cause divisions and offenses…

For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ,
but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech
deceive the hearts of the simple.”
Romans 16:17a-18

1. Identification of these false brethren

a) They are not servants of the Lord.

b) They are mere deceivers.

2. These false brethren must be noted and shunned by the Church (“avoid them”)!
