"Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin..."

Text: Romans 6:11

POWERFUL APPLICATION ENJOINED

Paul wrote powerfully. He also sought to live out his faith in God in as dynamic a way as possible. He also wrote to encourage his readers to make pointed and powerful application of the truth they learned. The following text is one such example.

“Likewise, you also, reckon yourselves to be dead
indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:11

1. Every reason to rejoice in the salvation we have in Christ

The following features of our salvation may be highlighted:-

a) There is forgiveness of sin.
b) There is justification (imputed righteousness).
c) There is the death of the old sinful nature.
d) There is powerful life for the present and for all eternity.

2. Reckoning oneself dead to sin

It is not enough to know the facts of our salvation in Christ. The real challenge is to make powerful application of our faith in life.

a) Reckoning
i) This involves the use of the mind and the will.
ii) There must be a conscious effort to apply the benefits of our salvation.
b) Reckoning of self as dead to sin
i) Sin has no more dominion over the believer.
ii) The believer can say “NO” to sin.
iii) He can reckon himself dead indeed to sin.
c) Reckoning of self alive to God
i) There must also be a conscious yielding of ourselves to live for God.
ii) There is a gentle reminder of being alive to God in Christ Jesus!
