"The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Text: Romans 6:23

NEVER TAKE SALVATION FOR GRANTED

We must never allow ourselves to take for granted our salvation. Paul certainly did not! In all his writings, he would often contrast the life of sin (the past) and the new life that the believer enjoys because of his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. In this manner, he appreciates his salvation afresh at each review.

“But now having been set free from sin, and having become
slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end,
everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God
is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:22-23

Let us take time to appreciate afresh our salvation in Christ Jesus.

1. We have been “set free from sin”

What a wondrous truth this is! Sin can no longer call us its slaves. We have freedom from the rule of sin.

2. We have become slaves of God instead

Let us always remember that we have not been merely freed from slavery to sin. We should consider ourselves “slaves to God” with great joy and gratitude! We should never balk at the thought that we are now slaves of God.

3. Fruit of holiness

Every good tree will produce good fruit- so Jesus taught. And what is that wonderful fruit that we may see produced in our life? Paul singled out the fruit of “holiness” for special mention. It is highlighted in stark contrast to “uncleanness and lawlessness”.

4. New Life in Christ

All of the above describe the new life that every believer has in Christ Jesus. How glorious this new life in Christ really is!

We are solemnly reminded about the wages of sin. Sin is a terrible paymaster. It rewards all its slaves with the wages of death.

5. Life for all eternity

The new life that we have in Christ has two dimensions:-

a) Life on earth

The Christian may look forward to a great and productive life on earth. Our life can be lived successfully and significantly!

b) Life in heaven

There is life beyond this earthly one. There is eternal life in Christ Jesus.
