"Speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine..."

Text: Titus 2:1

A SPEAKER FOR THE LORD

One of the challenges in ministry for the Lord is to learn how to speak effectively. The focus however is not public performance as a speaker. The focus is speaking that which truly edifies.

“But as for you, speak the things which are
proper for sound doctrine.”
Titus 2:1

1. “But as for you”

a) A contrast was offered
b) This contrast is with reference to the false teachers.
i) They speak fables.
ii) They resort to lying.
iii) They end up subverting people.
c) Titus must never emulate them in any way.

2. “Speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine”

a) The focus of speaking must be clearly borne in mind.
b) The subject content must always be:-
i) “Proper” literally means “fitting”.
ii) It must be contextually relevant.
iii) It must be “sound” or “healthy”.
iv) “Doctrine” literally means “teaching”.
c) Speaking for the Lord is not confined to the pulpit.

3. Dangers and pitfalls that confront speakers

The following are things that confront speakers today:-

a) The desire to present a good image of self
i) As one who is witty.
ii) As one who is popular.
b) The influence of the world
i) To be an entertainer.
ii) To focus on the trivial.
iii) To avoid speaking “doctrinal stuff”.
