"Sound speech..."

Text: Titus 2:8

SPEAKING FOR THE LORD

The ministry of the word involves “speech.” Many are fearful when they are called to serve the Lord. The fear of “public speaking” is a very real one.

1. Moses

He felt that he was not naturally gifted as a speaker (Exodus 4:10).

2. Jeremiah

He felt that he was too young and inexperienced to speak for the Lord (Jeremiah 1:6).

3. Isaiah

He was so conscious that he was sinful and thus unable to speak for the Lord (Isaiah 6:5).

SPEAKING WELL

The apostle Paul gave wise and sound advice to Titus on how he may speak well for the Lord.

“Sound speech that cannot be condemned,
that one who is an opponent may be ashamed,
having nothing evil to say of you.”
Titus 2:8

1. “Sound speech”

a) The focus is not on the art of public speaking.
b) Instead the focus is on the content of doctrine.
c) This verse is closely related to the previous verse concerning “doctrine”.
d) Titus was urged to focus on “sound” (that is, “healthy”) doctrine.

2. “That cannot be condemned”

a) People may find fault with a speaking style.
b) But sound speech cannot be easily put down.
i) The content is with reference to the sound speech of God.
ii) And the word must be taught with integrity.

3. “That one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you”

a) We are reminded of the example of the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) Many were the attempts made to confront Jesus with reference to His teachings.
c) Without fail He was able to teach the pure word of God against all man-made traditions.
d) Titus must not be afraid of opponents for they will not be able to refute Biblical teachings.
e) The challenge is obvious: to remain faithful and steadfast to the word of God and to be righteous in life so that no false and evil charges can be made.
