"They shall be like mighty men"

Text: Zechariah 10:5

THE LORD’S PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT

How wonderful to know that the Lord would be directly and personally involved in our life. His personal presence is absolutely vital for victory.

“They shall be like mighty men,
Who tread down their enemies
In the mire of the streets in the battle.
They shall fight because the LORD is with them,
And the riders on horses shall be put to shame.”
Zechariah 10:5

1. “They shall be like mighty men”

a) The people may not have been mighty men in the beginning.
b) But they would become mighty men as the Lord enabled them.

2. “Who tread down their enemies in the mire of the streets in the battle”

a) The guerrilla warfare carried out against the Seleucids is well-described here.
b) The enemies were certainly superior:
i) In numbers (60,000 troops were despatched by Antiochus Epiphanes to quell the Jews in Jerusalem).
ii) In fact, this was the second army that was sent. The first army was soundly defeated.
iii) The Seleucid army was far better armed and were led by a famous general.
c) Yet the small army of Jews numbering just 7000 were able to tread down their enemies in the street battles.

3. “They shall fight because the LORD is with them and the riders on horses shall be put to shame”

a) The Maccabees were humble Jewish priests (They had no military training).
b) They saw their beloved Temple desecrated by idols placed in it.
c) They felt a special sense of desire to conquer the enemies and cleanse the Temple.
d) They found the courage and strength because the LORD was with them.
e) The calvary of the Seleucids were defeated by humble guerrilla fighters!
