"I will strengthen them in the LORD"

Text: Zechariah 10:12

THE MIGHTY POWER OF GOD AT WORK

It would take the mighty power of God to make this prophecy come to pass.

“He shall pass through the sea with affliction,
And strike the waves of the sea:
All the depths of the River shall dry up.
Then the pride of Assyria shall be brought down,
And the sceptre of Egypt shall depart.
‘So I will strengthen them in the LORD,
And they shall walk up and down in His name,’
Says the LORD.”
Zechariah 10:11-12

1. Reminiscent of the time when Israel crossed the Red Sea

a) “He shall pass through the sea with affliction”
That is, God would, as it were, afflict the sea.
b) “And strike the waves of the sea”
This was how God enabled Israel to cross:
i) The Red Sea in the days of Moses.
ii) The River Jordan in the days of Joshua.
c) “All the depths of the River shall dry up”
i) This is to be understood figuratively.
ii) The meaning is simply, that nothing can stand in God’s way.

2. Egypt and Assyria were two major powers then

a) Assyria would be humbled by the Lord and be brought down.
b) The sceptre (representing the power of the Pharaoh) shall depart from him.

3. “I will strengthen them in the LORD”

a) The LORD Himself will strengthen His people.
b) They will be able to cross the borders of Assyria and Egypt freely.
c) It would be as if they were “walking up and down” (strolling).
