"Grace, grace to it"

Text: Zechariah 4:7

THE GRACE OF GOD

Behind the mighty power of the LORD is His matchless grace. This was emphasized in the following text.

“Who are you, O great mountain?
Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain!
And he shall bring forth the capstone
With shouts of ‘Grace, grace to it!'”
Zechariah 4:7

1. “Who are you, O great mountain?”

a) The use of personification was well-utilized.
b) The problems that the remnant faced were compared to “a great mountain”.
c) But what is a great mountain to an Almighty Creator God?

2. “Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain!”

a) Zerubbabel was appointed as the governor of the land of Judah.
b) His task was to govern the land.
c) He would help the remnant fit into the land.
d) He would also be tasked with rebuilding the Second Temple.
e) There were many problems that were huge, and they had to be resolved.
f) But with God’s help the mountain would become a mere plain!

3. “And he shall bring forth the capstone”

a) The completion of the Temple was in sight.
b) The capstone is used to describe the final piece to be laid.
i) Cornerstone
This is laid first when the building project starts.
ii) Capstone
This is laid last when the building project concludes.

4. “With shouts of ‘Grace, grace to it!'”

a) As the Temple project is finally completed great would be the joy.
b) Shouts of thanksgiving would be normally expected.
c) The shout, “Grace, grace to it” underscores the place of God’s grace.
d) It was God’s grace that brought the remnant home to Judah.
e) It was God’s grace from start to finish with reference to the Second Temple.
