"I will send out the curse"

Text: Zechariah 5:4

UNDERSTANDING GOD’S JUDGMENT

The vision of the flying scroll is instructive. The Judgment of God may be understood as involving two stages. The first stage is the writing of the scroll. The curse of the Lord was the subject. The second stage was the actual execution of the judgment that was written.

“‘I will send out the curse,’ says the LORD of hosts;
‘It shall enter the house of the thief
And the house of the one who swears falsely by My name.
It shall remain in the midst of his house
And consume it, with its timber and stones.'”
Zechariah 5:4

1. “‘I will send out the curse,’ says the LORD of hosts”

a) This was a decision made by the Lord.
b) It would be His will.
i) At this point of time, nothing would change the will of God.
ii) Not even intercession would be of any use.

2. The people highlighted in this judgment (curse)

a) The thief.
b) The person who swears falsely using the Lord’s name.

3. How it would affect the unrepentant people

a) The house of the thief:
i) It would not just affect the thief himself.
ii) It would affect his whole household.
iii) His ill-gotten gains would be forfeited.
iv) His actual house would be lost (timber and stones).
b) The house of the person who swears falsely:
i) All of the above would apply.
ii) All that he possesses would be consumed.

THE LORD OF HOSTS

Sadly, the house of Israel had forgotten who the LORD of hosts was.

1. He is the Supreme Judge.

2. He is the LORD who has absolute power and authority.

3. To forget and to forsake Him would end up with disastrous consequences.
