"With the wind in their wings"

Text: Zechariah 5:9

THE ANGELS OF GOD

We have come across descriptions of different types of angels of God. Some patrolled the earth. One was a teaching angel sent to instruct Zechariah. We ought not to be surprised when we read about these angelic beings described as women with wings.

“Then I raised my eyes and looked, and there were two women,
coming with the wind in their wings;
for they had wings like the wings of a stork,
and they lifted up the basket between earth and heaven.”
Zechariah 5:9

1. “Then I raised my eyes and looked”

a) Zechariah knew that he must train himself to look at details.
b) At first sight, he saw only a basket.
c) The angel of the Lord showed him a lead disc that was over the mouth of the basket.

2. “And there were two women”

a) The scene had changed.
b) Two women appeared but they were different.
i) Wings
They had wings! Obviously, these were not human beings.
ii) A stork
Their wings were like that of a stork.
iii) Wind
The wind usually represents speed.
iv) Strength
They possessed strength. They could carry the basket with the woman inside it.

3. Female angels?

a) We must not think that all angels are males.
b) These were certainly not male angels.
c) They may well be described as “female angels”.

(The general understanding of “gender” may not be imposed on angelic beings!)
