"The LORD their God will save them in that day"

Text: Zechariah 9:16

THE SALVATION THAT GOD GIVES

The Maccabean Revolt was highly successful in more ways than one. There was every reason to celebrate their victory.

“The LORD their God will save them in that day,
As the flock of His people.
For they shall be like the jewels of a crown,
Lifted like a banner over His land—
For how great is its goodness
And how great its beauty!
Grain shall make the young men thrive,
And new wine the young women.”
Zechariah 9:16-17

1. “The LORD their God will save them in that day”

a) This was a great divine promise.
b) God would always keep His word.

2. Some reasons for God to keep His word

a) They are His flock.
b) The people of God who trust Him as like “jewels of a crown”.
c) They are like the proud war banner that flutters proudly in victory.

3. Things to rejoice in after victory is secured

a) The Lord’s victory
i) The great goodness of God is celebrated.
ii) The great beauty of God’s divine help is to be appreciated.
b) God’s provision
Represented by the words “grain” and “wine”.
i) God would provide for His people.
ii) The benefits would go to all who are the Lord’s people.
The womenfolk are not excluded!

HANUKKAH

The victory against the Seleucid army in 165 BC is celebrated as Hanukkah. It was a battle that saw the Temple cleansed from idolatry.
