Day 36

"In My holy mountain"

Text: Zephaniah 3:11

DEALING WITH PAST SINS

God would have to deal with past sins that blighted the worship of Israel. Not only was there a problem of idolatry, there was a huge problem of human pride!

“In that day you shall not be shamed for any of your deeds
In which you transgress against Me;
For then I will take away from your midst
Those who rejoice in your pride,
And you shall no longer be haughty
In My holy mountain.”
Zephaniah 3:11

1. “In that day”

a) This is a reference to the time when Israel would return to their homeland.
b) Restored true worship is still in mind here.

2. The problem of “Transgression”

a) Three words were often used together to describe wrong-doing.
i) Sin
ii) Transgression
iii) Iniquity
b) Transgression was highlighted here.
i) Transgression is a violation of God’s laws.
ii) Many shameful deeds of transgressions had been committed by the nation.
c) Transgressions/ sins/ iniquity
i) These would have to be confessed.
ii) Forgiveness must be sought and found.
iii) God’s grace and mercy would be extended to the nation.

3. A special act of God

a) God would remove from the midst of the worshippers those who would not repent.
b) The sin of pride hastened the downfall of the nation and this problem must be dealt with summarily.
c) He would not permit haughtiness.
d) Thus, effectively, God removed the proud princes of the nation.

4. “You shall no longer be haughty in My holy mountain”

a) Pride and arrogance have no place in worship at all.
b) God’s sanctuary of worship would be characterized by holiness and haughtiness has no place at all.
