Present Yourselves to God as Being Alive From the Dead

Text: Romans 6

THE CHALLENGE NOT TO PRESENT OURSELVES AS DEAD IN SIN

1. Do not let sin reign

“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.” Romans 6:12
a. Sin should not reign in our mortal bodies
b. We do not want to be obedient to sin

2. Do not present ourselves as dead in sin

“And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin,” Romans 6:13
a. Members …a reference to the different parts of the body
b. We do not want to present ourselves as instruments of unrighteousness

THE CALL TO PRESENT OURSELVES ALIVE TO GOD

1. Presenting ourselves alive

“But present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.”   Romans 6:13
a. Members of the body to be alive
b. To be presented as instruments of righteousness to God

2. Reason to be alive

“For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”   Romans 6:14
a. Sin no longer has dominion over us
b. We are under grace.
c. God should reign in our lives instead

AN EXAMPLE OF HOW WE MAY PRESENT OURSELVES ALIVE TO GOD

1. Consciousness of God

a. God as King sitting on His throne
“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.”   Isaiah 6:1
b. He is a great and holy God
“And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”   Isaiah 6:3
c. Seeing the Lord as King over all
“For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.”   Isaiah 6:5

2. Conviction of sinfulness

“So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips;”   Isaiah 6:5
a. Sorrowing over our sins
b. Sin of unclean lips.
i. Personally
ii. As a nation   (Isaiah 1)

3. Cleansing of the Lord

“Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth with it, and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged.”   Isaiah 6:6
a. A spiritual work of cleansing
b. Live coal…represents fire that was meant to cleanse
c. The lips of Isaiah were cleansed and his sins were taken away
d. Forgiveness of sin given

4. The call of God to present oneself alive to Him

a. God’s call to Isaiah to present himself to be sent
“Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?”   Isaiah 6:7
b. Isaiah presented himself to the Lord
“Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”   Isaiah 6:8
