IN YOU, O LORD, I PUT MY TRUST

 

(I) STRUGGLES EVEN WHEN TRUSTING IN GOD

1. Problems

a) Being in the hand of the wicked (Psalm 71:4)

b) Being a wonder to many (Psalm 71:7)

c) Being cast off in old age (Psalm 71:9)

d) Being hurt (Psalm 71:12)


2. Feelings

a) Fear

b) Dread of death

c) Defeated


3. Struggles from youth to old age

a) Youth (Psalm 71:5)

b) Old Age (Psalm 71:9, 18)

 

(II) OVERCOMING STRUGGLES WITH A JOURNEY OF TRUST AND HOPE IN GOD

1. Trust and hope in God from youth (Psalm 71:5-6)

a) Upheld since birth

b) Praising the Lord continually


2. Unspoken trust and hope in the continuing struggles of life (Psalm 71:7-8)

a) The Lord as a strong refuge

b) Mouth filled the Lord’s praise and glory all the day


3. Trust and hope in God continually even in old age (Psalm 71:14-15)

a) Praising the Lord yet more and more

b) Declaring the righteousness of God


(III) APPLICATIONS OF HOPE AND TRUST IN GOD

1. Increasing Strength

a) Going in the strength of the Lord (Psalm 71:16)

2. Increasing appreciation of the attributes of God

a) His righteousness

i) Speaking of the Lord’s righteousness (Psalm 71:15)

iii) God’s righteousness is very high (Psalm 71:19)

b) His faithfulness (Psalm 71:22)


3. Increasing joy and praise of God

a) Greatly rejoice in the Lord (Psalm 71:23)

b) Singing with instruments to the Lord (Psalm 71:22)

c) Talking of His righteousness the Lord all the day (Psalm 71:24)
