BLESS YOUR INHERITANCE
Text: Psalm 28
29 July 2012
(I) A POSITION OF GREAT BLESSING…TO BE GOD’S INHERITANCE
1. David’s perspective of God’s people was that they were His inheritance
“The Lord is their strength and He is the saving refuge of His anointed. Save Your people, and bless Your inheritance; shepherd them also, a nd bear them up forever.” Psalm 28:8, 9
a) Israel is specially anointed as God’s inheritance
b) They belong to Him as His people
c) They are treasured by Him
d) They are His heritage
2. Drawn from a Mosaic perspective
a) Reflected in a song that Moses wrote
b) Derived from how Israel had been redeemed from Egypt
“You will bring them in and plant them in the mountain of Your inheritance” Exodus 15:17
c) A perspective that He reminded Israel of
“But the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be His people, an inheritance, as you are this day.” Deuteronomy 4:20
d) They were indeed special to God
3. Danger of losing that position of being God’s inheritance
“Then he said, “If now I have found grace in Your sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray, go among us, even though we are a stiff-necked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as Your inheritance.” Exodus 34:9
a) When Israel sinned against the Lord
b) Moses asked for God to take them as His inheritance
(II) THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING BLESSED AS GOD’S INHERITANCE
1. A plea to maintain this privilege of being God’s inheritance
“And bless Your inheritance” Psalm 28:9
2. The challenge of facing the silence of God
“To You I will cry, O Lord my Rock: Do not be silent to me, Lest, if You are silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.” Psalm 28:1
a) David was faced with the silence of God
b) He felt like he was going into the pit
3. The plea for the Lord not to silent
a) David cried out to the Lord
“To You I will cry, O Lord my Rock: Do not be silent to me, Lest, if You are silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.” Psalm 28:1
b) God will hear our prayers
“Hear the voice of my supplications when I cry to You, when I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary.” Psalm 28:2
c) He pleads that he is unlike the wicked
“Do not take me away with the wicked and with the workers of iniquity, who speak peace to their neighbors, but evil is in their hearts.” Psalm 28:3
4. God breaking His silence
a) Heard our prayers
“Blessed be the Lord , because He has heard the voice of my supplications!” Psalm 28:6
b) As our Strength and Shield, He has proven our trust in Him
“ The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped” Psalm 28:7
c) Much joy in singing
“Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song I will praise Him.” Psalm 28:7
5. Asking God to continue to bless His inheritance
(III) PRAYING FOR FURTHER BLESSINGS THAT WE CAN SEEK AS HIS INHERITANCE
“The Lord is their strength and He is the saving refuge of His anointed. Save Your people, and bless Your inheritance; shepherd them also, a nd bear them up forever.” Psalm 28:9
