RETURNED WITH A LOUD VOICE GLORIFIED GOD
Text: TEXT : LUKE 17:11-19
2 November 2008
(I) THE AWESOME POWER OF THE LORD DEMONSTRATED ON THE LEPERS
1. A desperate plea for the mercy of the Lord.
“And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” Luke 17:13
2. The cleansing power of the Lord
“So when He saw them, He said to them, ‘Go, show yourselves to the priests.’ And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed.” Luke 17:14
(II) APPROPRIATE RESPONSE OF THE SAMARITAN LEPER IN GIVNG GLORY TO THE LORD
1. Awed by the work of healing of Jesus
“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed” Luke 17:15
2. Returned to the Lord
“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned…” Luke 17:15
3. Glorifying the Lord in a most exuberant manner
“…and with a loud voice glorified God” Luke 17:15
4. Humble recognition of the Lord
“And fell down on his face at His feet… ” Luke 17:16
5. Showing a deep heart of gratitude to the Lord
“…giving Him thanks…” Luke 17:16
6. Giving glory despite being a foreigner…a Samaritan
“…And he was a Samaritan.” Luke 17:16
“Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” Luke 17:18
7. A small minority who will respond appropriately
(III) ADDRESSING THE JEWISH LEPERS’ PROBLEM OF TAKING THE LORD FOR GRANTED
1. As Jews, the 9 lepers should have responded more appropriately
2. But they took the Lord’s miracle for granted
“So Jesus answered and said, ‘Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?’ ” Luke 17:17
3. They took things for granted by not returning or giving glory
“Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” Luke 17:18
4. It was a real rebuke from the Lord in comparing the 9 lepers to the Samaritan leper
5. The majority had taken the Lord for granted
(IV) A COMMENDATION FROM THE LORD FOR THE FAITH OF THE SAMARITAN LEPER
“And He said to him, ‘Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.’ ” Luke 17:19
1. The faith of the Samaritan leper
2. Jesus honoured him for his outstanding faith
(V) APPLIYING OUR FAITH IN THE GIVING OF GLORY TO THE LORD
1. Be awed by the Lord Jesus for His power demonstrated
2. Express our faith in giving deep gratitude to the Lord
3. Make sure that we do not take the Lord for granted
4. Give exuberant glory to God
