SING OUT THE HONOR OF HIS NAME
Text: Psalm 66

(I) UNDERSTANDING THE LORD’S NAME
“The honor of His name” Psalm 66:1-2
1. The nature of God’s name
a) It is profound – The Self-existing and eternal God
“I AM WHO I AM” Exodus 3:14
b) It is personal, historical and covenantal
“The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob…” Exodus 3:15
c) It is perpetual
“This is My name forever…” Exodus 3:15
d) It is powerful – Lordship
“I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name LORD I was not known to them.” Exodus 6:3
2. The honour of God’s name
a) Honour” means “glory”
b) The means – The greatness of His power ( Psalm 66:3 )
c) The results – The awesomeness of His works ( Psalm 66:3 )
(II) APPRECIATING THE HONOUR OF GOD’S NAME
1. The Theological aspect (Psalm 66:6-7)
a) God doing Great signs
i) Opening the red sea
ii) Opening the river Jordan
b) God ruling with His power over the nations
2. The corporate (His people) aspect (Psalm 66:9-12)
a) Preservation of the souls of His people
b) Refining of His people
3. The personal aspect (Psalm 66:17-19, 20)
a) Prayers answered / in-depth work of the soul
i) Crying out to God in times of trouble
ii) Choosing to even extol the Lord’s name at the same time
iii) Comprehension of how sin can affect our prayer
b) God answering prayer according to His mercy
(III) THE LORD’S DESIRE FOR HIS NAME TO BE GREAT IN THE WORLD
1. Purposeful
“But indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth.” Exodus 9:16
2. Personalising
“Say to God…All the earth shall worship You and sing praise to You; they shall sing praises to Your name.” Psalm 66:4
3. Projection
“From the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place shall be offered to My name, and a pure offering, for My name shall be great among the nations.” Malachi 1:11
(IV) THE CHALLENGE TO BRING HONOUR TO GOD’S GLORIOUS NAME
1. Having the highest regard for God’s name
2. Extolling the name of God in song (Psalm 66:1-2)
a) Joyfully
b) Gloriously
c) Humbly
3. Bearing testimony of the Lord and His name (Psalm 66:16)
a) Come and see… ( Psalm 66:5 )
b) Come and hear… ( Psalm 66:16 )
