(I) THE POOR REGARD FOR GOD’S NAME

1. The blasphemy of God’s Name

“For ‘the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you’…” Romans 2:24

2. The misuse of the name of Jesus

“We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches” Acts 19:13

(II) THE CORRECT REGARD FOR GOD’S NAME IN PRAYER

“In this manner, therefore pray:Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name…” Matthew 6:9

1. Reference to God

a) As Father

b) As One who resides in heaven

“For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:‘I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit,To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” Isaiah 57:15

2. Reverence of God

“…Hallowed be Your name…” Matthew 6:9

a) Conscious use of the name of God

b) Careful use of the name of God

c) Consecration of the name of God

i) Hallowed… “sanctified”

ii) Hallowed… “sacred”

iii) Hallowed…”solemnity”

iv) Hallowed…”special”

(III) THE EXAMPLE OF THE LORD JESUS IN HALLOWING THE NAME OF GOD

1. As Father (Cf. John 17:1, 5, 11, 21, 25)

a) “O Father” ( John 17:5 )

b) Holy Father ( John 17:11 )

c) Righteous Father ( John 17:25 )

2. As Son

“…Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may also glorify You” John 17:1

a) Work

“…I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.” John 17:4

b) God’s Name

“I have manifested Your name…” John 17:6

“And I have declared to them Your name…” John 17:26

c) Word of God

“…I have given to them the words which You have given Me…” John 17:8

d) Oneness

“That they all may be one…” John 17:21
