In peril of the immorality trap
Text: Text : Rev 2:18-29
10 September 2006
(I) THE SUBTLE TRAPS OF IMMORALITY
“Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.” Revelation 2:20
1. The influence of Jezebel
a) To engage in sexual immorality.
b) Part of the ancient cultic practice of idolatry.
2. Trapped by its subtle influence
a) Tolerated and allowed to enter
“Because you allow that woman Jezebel” Revelation 2:20
b) Taught as a doctrine
“To teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.” Revelation 2:20
c) Seduced even those who were the Lord’s servants
“To teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.” Revelation 2:20
(II) THE STATE OF IMMORALITY CANNOT BE HIDDEN FROM THE LORD
1. Attempt to hide the state of immorality with the Lord’s work
“I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first.” Revelation 2:19
a) First works
b) Love
c) Service
d) Faith
e) Perseverance
f) Last Works
2. Yet the Lord is able to see clearly their true state of morality
a) Eyes like flame of fire to see everything with the light shinning
“And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, ‘These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire” Revelation 2:18
b) He is able to search the inner most parts
“And all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts.” Revelation 2:23
3. Nothing can be hidden from the Lord.
(III) Serious judgments that will come on the immoral
1. Jesus as the Son of God will judge
“And His feet like fine brass:” Revelation 2:18
2. Address those who promote such activities
a) The prophetess Jezebel was given grace to repent
“And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.” Revelation 2:21
b) To face tribulation
“Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.” Revelation 2:22
c) Death as a last resort
“I will kill her children with death” Revelation 2:23
d) Everyone is accountable
“And I will give to each one of you according to your works.” Revelation 2:23
(IV) SET FREE FROM THE TRAPPINGS OF IMMORALITY
1. Repentance
“Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.” Revelation 2:22
2. Be accountable to the Lord
3. Guard ourselves
4. Hold on to that which is moral
