FACING THE PROBLEMS OF OLD AGE

1. The problem of primal fear

a. The fear of old age / death
i. The fear of being forsaken   (Psalm 71:9)
ii. The fear of strength failing   (Psalm 71:9)
iii. The fear of being old   (Psalm 71:18)
b. The fear of shame   (Psalm 71:1)

2. The problem of negative thoughts

a. Thoughts of how God will cast us off   (Psalm 71:9)
b. Thoughts of how God is far from us   (Psalm 71:12)

LEARNING TO FACE THE PROBLEMS OF OLD AGE

1. Take time to remember God

a. Remember that God upheld us from birth   (Psalm 71:6)
b. Remember trusting God from our youth   (Psalm 71:5, 17)
c. Remember God’s faithfulness   (Psalm 71:22)

2. Learning to rely on God

a. To place our trust in God   (Psalm 71:1)
b. To continue to trust and hope in God   (Psalm 71:14)

3. Learning to renew our strength in God

a. Experiencing God as a strong refuge   (Psalm 71:7)
b. Determining to go in the strength of the Lord   (Psalm 71:16)

RESPONDING TO GOD WITH GREAT JOY AND PRAISE

1. Hoping in God and praising the Lord continually   (Psalm 71:14)

2. Praising God in whatever way we can   (Psalm 71:22-23)

3. Greatly rejoicing in singing to the Lord   (Psalm 71:23)
