Lord, Be Merciful to Me

BACKGROUND OF THE PSALMS OF DAVID

1. David wrote about the many attributes of God in his Psalms

2. In Psalm 41, David spoke of the mercies of God

DISCOVERING THE MERCIES OF GOD

1. David came to a personal discovery of God in his life

2. He discovered God as One who was merciful

BELIEVING IN THE MERCIES OF GOD

1. David came to believe in the mercies of God through the experiences of life

2. He had learnt to place his hope and trust in God’s mercies

“The LORD will deliver…”   Psalm 41:1b
“The LORD will preserve…”   Psalm 41:2
“The LORD will strengthen…”   Psalm 41:3

PLEADING FOR THE MERCIES OF GOD

1. David sought to put his faith to practice amidst the problems of life

a. He had sinned against God
b. He exercised his faith in the mercies of God
“LORD, be merciful to me; heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.”   Psalm 41:4

2. David pleaded for the mercies of God

a. We can plead for the mercies of God even when we are not deserving
b. God will answer mercifully

RECEIVING THE MERCIES OF GOD

1. Receiving His mercies as a confirming sign

a. God’s mercies are a confirming sign to us
b. That He is pleased with us
“By this I know that You are well pleased with me…”   Psalm 41:11a

2. Receiving His mercies in the circumstances of life

a. We will not be defeated by the challenges of life
“Because my enemy does not triumph over me”   Psalm 41:11b
b. He will uphold us
“As for me, You uphold me in my integrity”   Psalm 41:12a
c. He will set us before His face
“And set me before Your face forever”   Psalm 41:12b

PRAISING GOD FOR HIS MERCIES IN OUR LIVES

1. It is good and right response to give praise for the mercies of God

“Blessed be the LORD God of Israel…”   Psalm 41:13

2. We must be moved to order our lives aright

OUR CHALLENGE

1. To discover and believe in the mercies of God

2. To know that we can plead to a God who is merciful

3. To appreciate and give thanks for the mercies that we receive
