COMMITTED TO MY TRUST
Text: TEXT : 1 TIM 1
11 June 2006
(I) THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING ENTRUSTED WITH THE SCRIPTURES
1. Special revelation to Paul as the Lord’s apostle
“Which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets” Ephesians 3:5-6
2. God believed in Paul to entrust him with His glorious gospel
“According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.” 1 Timothy 1:11
3. God trusted in Paul because of Divine enabling
“And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man;” 1 Timothy 1:12-13
a. God was willing to trust Paul despite being a man full of sin in the past
b. It was because of the Lord that Paul was enabled to be in the ministry of the word
(II) THE PROBLEM OF NOT FULFILLING OUR ROLE OF BEING ENTRUSTED WITH THE SCRIPTURES
1. Those who choose to reject and disobey it
“Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the oracles of God.” Romans 3:2
2. Those who choose to abuse the trust given
“Desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.” 1 Timothy 1:7
“Give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.” 1 Timothy 1:4
“From which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk,” 1 Timothy 1:6
(III) THE PERSON TO WHOM GOD SEEKS TO ENTRUST HIS SCRIPTURES
1. He is approved by God
“But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts.” 1 Thessalonians 2:4
2. He is faithful
“And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry,” 1 Timothy 1:12
3. He is a pattern for the believers
“However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.” 1 Timothy 1:16
(IV) A PERSONAL CHALLENGE TO PASS ON THE LEGACY OF THE SCRIPTURES
“O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babble and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge—” 1 Timothy 6:20
1. The legacy of the Scriptures must continue to be passed on from one generation to another…Paul to Timothy
2. The next generation must be ready to be entrusted with the Scriptures
3. The challenge is for us to guard what is given to us
