I WILL PRAISE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART
Text: Psalm 86
12 June 2011
(I) THE PROBLEM OF HAVING A DIVIDED HEART
1. A divided heart is where the heart is drawn to other things
2. Israel’s heart was divided as they were drawn to idolatry
“Their heart is divided; now they are held guilty. He will break down their altars; He will ruin their sacred pillars.” Hosea 10:2
3. It is a heart that is disloyal…just as Solomon ended up with
“For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the LORD his God, as was the heart of his father David.” 1 Kings 11:4
4. David recognized such dangers and rejected idols and idolaters
“I have hated those who regard useless idols but I trust in the Lord.” Psalm 31:6
5. Even in the midst of the troubles of life
a) In great need
“For I am poor and needy.” Psalm 86:1
b) In trouble
“In the day of my trouble I will call upon You,” Psalm 86:7
c) In facing enemies
“O God, the proud have risen against me, and a mob of violent men have sought my life,” Psalm 86:14
(II) A PROPER PERSPECTIVE CONCERNING THE HEART
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:4, 5
1. A commandment of Moses to Israel concerning the heart
2. They were to love with all their heart
3. Their heart should never work on its own
4. They were also to love with all their soul and with all their strength
(III) THE PRAYER FOR THE UNITING OF OUR HEART
“Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name.” Psalm 86:11
1. The uniting of one’s heart means that dividedness is avoided
2. There is the uniting of the heart by the Lord
3. There is singleness of heart towards the Lord…to love the Lord and to fear Him
4. Loyalty to the Lord
5. David prayed for this singleness of heart
“…Unite my heart to fear your name” Psalm 86:11
(IV) THE PRACTICE OF THIS SINGLENESS OF HEART
1. Relating to the Lord in prayer
a) Asking God to bow His ear and hear ( Psalm 86:1, 6 )
b) For His preservation ( Psalm 86:2 )
c) To give salvation ( Psalm 86:2 )
d) To be merciful ( Psalm 86:3, 16 )
e) Give joy ( Psalm 86:4 )
f) To lift up one’s soul to ( Psalm 86:4 )
2. Relying on the assurances of the Lord
a) Good ( Psalm 86:5 )
b) Ready to forgive ( Psalm 86:5 )
c) Abundant in mercy ( Psalm 86:5, 13 )
d) Answer our call ( Psalm 86:7 )
“In the day of trouble I will call upon You for You will answer me.”
e) None like the Lord ( Psalm 86:8, 10 )
“Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord”
f) Does wondrous works ( Psalm 86:8, 10 )
“Nor are there any works like Your works.”
(V) PRAISE WITH THE WHOLE HEART
“I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart and I will glorify Your name forevermore.” Psalm 86:12
1. Praise with the heart
2. Praise with singleness of heart
3. Praise that would truly give glory to the Lord’s name
