Topic: “THEREFORE WITH JOY YOU SHALL DRAW WATER FROM THE WELLS OF SALVATION”

LEARNING SPIRITUAL LESSONS FROM LIFE

1. Crossing of the Red Sea
(Exodus 15:1-19)

a) Israel crossed the Red Sea safely
b) Egypt’s army was destroyed in the Red Sea

2. Celebration
(Exodus 15:1-21)

a) Song of praise by Moses
b) Song of Miriam

3. Confronting the Wilderness of Shur
(Exodus 15:22-27)

a) The joy experienced was short-lived
b) Three days into the Wilderness… no water found (Exodus 15:22)
c) A place called Marah (“bitter”) (Exodus 15:23)
d) Complaining spirit of the children of Israel (Exodus 15:24)

4. Healing of the waters of Marah

a) Moses cried out to the LORD (Exodus 15:25)
b) The LORD healed the waters (Exodus 15:25)

5. Vital Lessons

a) Testing by the LORD (Exodus 15:25)
b) Statute/ commandment (Exodus 15:26)
i) If you heed the voice of the LORD your God
ii) And do what is right in His sight
iii) Give ear to His commandments
iv) And keep all His statutes
v) I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians
vi) I am the LORD who heals you

a) Twelve wells of water

c) They camped by the waters

GOD’S WONDROUS PROVISION
(Exodus 16:1- 17:7)

1. Provision of Manna (Exodus 16; John 6)

a) The lessons were virtually lost on the children of Israel
b) Jesus taught Israel the following vital truths (John 6)
i) Do not labour for the food that perishes (John 6:27a)
ii) But for the food that endures to everlasting life (John 6:27b)
iii) Which the Son of Man will give you (John 6:27c)
iv) Because the Father has set His seal upon Him (John 6:27d)
v) My Father gives you the true bread from heaven (John 6:32b)
vi) For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven (John 6:33a)
vii) And gives life to the world (John 6:33b)
viii) I am the bread of life (John 6:35, 48)
ix) This is the bread that comes down from heaven that one may eat of it and not die (John 6:50)
x) I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread he will live forever (John 6:51)
xi) This is the bread which came down from heaven (John 6:58a)
xii) He who eats this bread will live forever (John 6:58b)

2. Provision of water from a Rock (Exodus 17:1-7)

a) Historical context: In the wilderness of Sin (Exodus 17:1a)
b) Camped at Rephidim but there was no water to drink (Exodus 17:1b)
c) The people thirsted… complained against Moses (Exodus 17:3)
d) Moses was told to strike the rock (Exodus 17:6-7)

3. Jesus’ teaching on the subject of

a) He who comes to Me shall never hunger and he who believes in Me shall never thirst
(John 6:35b)
b) Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day (John 6:54)
c) For My flesh is food indeed and My blood is drink indeed (John 6:55)
d) He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him (John 6:56)

4. Invitation of Jesus

a) If you knew the gift of God and who it is who says to you, “Give Me a drink,”
You would have asked Him, and He would give you living water.” (John 4:10)
b) Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of thus water will thirst again,
But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will become in him
a fountain of living water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:13-14)
c) If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:37b-38)

5. Prophecies concerning the provision of water

a) Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not knot it? (Isaiah 43:19)
i) I will even make a road in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert (Isaiah 43:19)
b) The beasts of the field will honour Me…
Because I give waters in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert
To give drink to My people, My chosen.
This people I have formed for Myself; they shall declare My praise. (Isaiah 43:20-21)
c) Ho! Everyone who thirsts. “Come to the waters” (Isaiah 55:1)

6. Lament on the subject of forsaking God

My people have committed two evils:
They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters,
And hewn themselves cisterns- broken cisterns that can hold no water. (Jeremiah 2:15)

7. Spiritual thirst described

As the deer pants for the water brooks,
So pants my soul for You, O God.

My soul thirsts for God, the living God,
When shall I appear before God? (Psalm 42:1-2)
