Topic: The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem

6 So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them.
7 They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them.
8 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:
“Hosanna to the Son of David!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
Hosanna in the highest!”
10 And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?”
11 So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”

THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY

1. Why was this text called “The Triumphal Entry?”

2. How was this Triumphal?

THE PRE-ARRANGED PLAN TO RIDE INTO JERUSALEM

1. This was to fulfil prophecy Zechariah 9

2. The Lord would ride into Jerusalem as the prophesied Messianic King

a) This turned out smoothly
b) The Disciples brought to the Lord Jesus
i) The donkey
ii) The colt of the donkey

3. The wisdom of the Lord

a) A young colt would not easily allow anyone to ride on its back
b) The mother-donkey’s presence would allow the colt to remain calm when mounted

THE RECEPTION OF THE LORD JESUS

1. Clothes

a) Placed on the colt for the Lord to sit on more comfortably
b) Placed on the road as a sign of regard and support
c) This was done for King Jehu 2 Kings 9:13

2. Cutting down branches of Palms

a) As an expression of joy and celebration
b) As a sign of jubilation

3. The cry of Hosanna

a) Originally the word meant “Save now”
b) In time, it became a chorus of praise

4. An acclamation given to the Lord Jesus

a) Son of David
i) This was a title of the Messiah
ii) The crowd was declaring the Lord as the Messiah
b) Hosanna in the highest
i) One part was to ask the Lord to save the people
ii) Another part was to offer the highest praise to Him
c) The coming of the Lord into Jerusalem
i) He was jubilantly received
ii) Many offered Him praise in recognition of His identity

 

PILGRIMS IN JERUSALEM

1. There were some who had come to Jerusalem from afar

a) These were pilgrims
b) They would make their way to Jerusalem on special festivals
c) Passover, Pentecost, Tabernacle
d) These had not known much and asked “Who is this?”

2. The clear and confident reply

a) “This is Jesus”
b) He was hailed as a prophet from Nazareth

THE ACCLAMATION OF THE LORD JESUS

1. This was only right

2. The Lord was the Messianic King

3. The sad reality was that the joy of the people was so short-lived

OUR CHALLENGE

1. To recognize the Lord Jesus for who He is

2. To receive Him duly as our King and our Lord

3. To rejoice in Him

4. To relate to Him faithfully
