MATTHEW’S PRESENTATION OF THE GENEALOGY OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
1. The Significance of the Genealogy of the Lord Jesus
a) Ancestry was important to the Jews
b) It shows Authenticity
2. The Lineage of the Lord Jesus
a) He is “The Son of David” Matthew 1:1a
b) He is called “The Son of Abraham” Matthew 1:1a
3. Why was the word “Son” capitalized?
a) To show that the Lord Jesus was not just an ordinary son of David/ Abraham
b) Joseph was also called “son of David” Matthew 1:20
c) This was how an angel addressed him
d) Simply put, the Lord Jesus was called “The Christ” Matthew 1:16, 17
THE CHRIST
1. The word “Christ” is not a name
2. It was a Title
3. It means, “The Messiah”
PROPHECY ABOUT THE MESSIAH AS THE SEED OF ABRAHAM
1. There were many prophecies concerning the Messiah
2. The Seed of Abraham
Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ Galatians 3:16
In your Seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice. Genesis 22:18
a) The word “Seed” can mean “Son”
b) The Lord Jesus was that special Seed of Abraham
c) He was the Son (Seed) of Abraham
PROPHECY ABOUT THE MESSIAH AS THE SON OF DAVID
1. King David
19 Then You spoke in a vision to Your [d]holy one,
And said: “I have given help to one who is mighty;
I have exalted one chosen from the people.
20 I have found My servant David;
With My holy oil I have anointed him,
21 With whom My hand shall be established;
Also My arm shall strengthen him.Psalm 89:19-21
2. The Seed (Son) of David
34 My covenant I will not break,
Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.
35 Once I have sworn by My holiness;
I will not lie to David36 His Seed shall endure forever,
And his throne as the sun before Me;37 It shall be established forever like the moon,
Even like the faithful witness in the sky.”Psalm 89:34-37
