HE WHO FOLLOWS ME SHALL NOT WALK IN DARKNESS

Text: John 8:12

DREAD DARKNESS

How dreadful it is to think that we could be walking in spiritual darkness! This is a danger that we must not take for granted! The following statements about darkness were made in the Gospel of John.

1. Darkness is already in the world      John 1:4-5

2. Jesus gives Light that shines in the darkened world      John 1:4-5

3. People sometimes prefer darkness to light      John 3:19

4. They hate Light because their wicked deeds would then be exposed        John 3:19

JESUS AS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Jesus made a very clear and strong statement about being the Light of the world.

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying,
“I am the light of the world.
He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness,
But have the light of life.”           John 8:12

As long as I am in the world,
I am the light of the world.        John 9:5


A GLORIOUS PROMISE

What a glorious promise the Lord Jesus has given to all who trust in Him.

1. Shall not walk in darkness

a) This promise should fill the heart with joy

b) Strong emphasis is found in the phrase “shall not”

2. Reasons why we may have this confidence of not walking in darkness

a) It has to do with the Lord Jesus Christ Himself

i) He is the Source of light

ii) He is the Giver of light

b) Our relationship with the Lord Jesus is of great significance

i) We must follow the Lord Jesus

ii) This is another way of walking with the Lord

c) We will have the light of life in us

i) Jesus will help us possess this light

ii) This light will be in us


LET US BE CHALLENGED TO WALK IN THE LIGHT OF JESUS

We live in a world that seems to become increasingly darker. Let us seek to walk with the Lord Jesus closely so that we may shine forth for Him.
