A STRONG CHRISTOLOGICAL EMPHASIS
In all the Gospels we will find a very strong Christological emphasis. Each Gospel writer is deeply convinced that Jesus, the son of Joseph was indeed the promised Messiah. Each writer was deeply committed to sharing and proclaiming that Jesus was indeed “The Christ!”

MATTHEW, THE CONVERTED TAX-COLLECTOR
There was a time when Matthew did not have faith in the Lord Jesus.

1. He was a tax collector (Matthew 9:9)

2. The office of a tax collector was despised by many

a) They were shunned

b) They were categorised among the worst of sinners

3. One day he met Jesus

a) Jesus invited him to be a disciple

b) Without hesitation he followed Jesus

c) He went on to become an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ

d) His significant legacy was a Gospel named after him

PRESENTING JESUS AS THE MESSIAH-KING
Matthew went to great lengths to portray Jesus as the Christ (The Messiah). One of the prophecies was that the Messiah would be from the line of David.

1. The genealogy of Jesus was offered

a) This genealogy traced the ancestry of Jesus

b) In three sets of genealogical references Matthew demonstrated that Jesus was indeed “Son of David” Matthew 1:1

2. The appearance of the Wise Men was noted

a) Wise Men from the East appeared

b) They declared that they had a special star

c) They were convinced that the King of the Jews had been born

d) They had come to offer Him worship (Cf. Matthew 2:1-15)
