THE BOOK OF PSALMS

There were a number of authors who wrote and contributed significantly to the Book of Psalms.

King David was a major contributor to this collec tion of Hebrew poetry book. Several things may be

observed as we look at the Book of Psalms.

1. The Psalms represented Hebrew poetry

2. The main theme: Poetic reflections about the Lord their God

3. Some features to be noted

(a) Praise

(b) Prayer

(c) Prophecy (Messianic)

(d) Personal

THE DAVIDIC PSALMS

David often wrote out of personal experience. Psalm 3 is typical.

But You, O LORD are a shield for me,

My glory and the One who lifts up my head.

I cried to the LORD with my voice,

and He heard me from His holy hill. Psalm 3:3-4

1. O LORD

(a) This was a common phrase David employed when he addressed God

(b) Significance of the word “LORD”

i. This was the Covenant-name of God

ii. This was the name that God said He would use in His relationship

iii. David’s subjects would address him as “lord”

iv. David acknowledged God as his Overlord

2. God as a Shield

(a) In those days, kings personally went into battle

(b) All soldiers would be given a shield as part of the battle gear issued

(c) David acknowledged the LORD as his Shield

3. God as his glory

(a) In battles soldiers win glory and honour

(b) David had earned much glory when he killed Goliath

(c) But to him, the LORD was his glory

WHAT IS GOD TO YOU?

David found much joy and significance in his knowledge and understanding of the LORD. What is God to you? Have you found God real to you? May our hearts be drawn ever closer to the Lord!
