HOSANNA TO THE SON OF DAVID
Text: Matthew 21
9 April 2017
HOSANNA- AS A PRAYER
This word in Hebrew was originally a cry for salvation! It was the prayer of those who were desperately in need of help from God!
- It was a cry for protection
- It was a prayer for deliverance
- It was uttered with faith in heart
HOSANNA- AS PRAISE
The same word “Hosanna” slowly took on another significance. It became a word of praise to the Lord for sending salvation. Hence the shout of praise found in this text.
Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!
Hosanna in the Highest! Matthew 21:9
- Hosanna was now sung
a) To the Son of David
b) This was the Messianic term for the King anointed by God
c) The highest Hosanna praise was given to the Messiah
- Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord
a) The Messiah would never come in His own name
b) He would come in the name of the Lord
i) His authority would come from the Lord God
ii) His messages would also come from the same source
iii) He would have power from the Lord God for ministry
THE PEOPLE WHO WELCOMED JESUS AS THE SON OF DAVID
Who were identified as the people who sang Hosanna praises to Jesus as the Messiah?
1. The disciples of the Lord Jesus Matthew 21:6
a) They had been with Jesus
b) They had seen His power
c) They had listened to His messages
d) They had been personally instructed
e) They were convinced that Jesus was indeed the true heir to the throne of David
f) He was the Messiah of God
2. The children sang Hosanna praise to the Lord Jesus Christ Matthew 21:15-16
a) In their sweet innocence, they picked up the song the adults sang
b) Did they understand what they were singing?
i) They had a measure of understanding
ii) Some may have heard and seen Jesus perform miracles
iii) They would not, of course, have full knowledge!
iv) But the fact that Jesus defended them would suggest that they were not wrong to sing this special praise song to Him
REJOICING IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
What joy we may have in our hearts as we think of what it means to rejoice in the Lord Jesus Christ!
- He is our Saviour
- He is our Lord
- He is the Captain of our salvation
It is perfectly right and proper that we rejoice in our knowledge and understanding of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ! Hosanna in the Highest!
