A DESCRIPTION OF GOD
How does one describe God? The Apostle Paul described the Lord God with these words.
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible,
To God who alone is wise, be honour and glory
Forever and ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 1:17
The Psalmists also tried to describe the Lord God. Here are two attempts.
The LORD is merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. Psalm 103:8
O LORD my God, You are very great:
You are clothed with honour and majesty Psalm 104:1
The attributes of God are many. The combined attributes of the LORD God may be listed here (but they do not exhaust all that God is).
- King eternal
- Immortal
- Invisible
- Absolute wisdom
- Merciful/ abounding in mercy
- Gracious
- Slow to anger
- Great
- Clothed with honour and majesty
EXPRESS IMAGE OF HIM
The writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews wrote these words about the Lord Jesus Christ.
Who being the brightness of His glory
And the express image of His person Hebrews 1:3
- Brightness of His glory
a) This is a description of the radiance of Christ Jesus
b) His glory reflects fully the Being of God
- The express image of His person
a) The phrase “express image” is the translation of one word in the Greet text
b) That word is the root for the English word “character”
THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
As we celebrate Christmas, let us bear in mind the Person who came to be our Saviour! He is to be worshipped and to be given the highest regard for He came to reveal to us who God is.
No one has seen God at any time.
The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom
Of His Father, He has declared Him. John 1:18
