BEING AN EXAMPLE
The doctrine of being “An example” is consistently taught in the Scriptures. The new pulpit series will focus on how this teaching may be understood and practised.
THE EXAMPLE OF THE APOSTLE PAUL
Paul wrote to urge his friends in the church at Philippi to follow his example.
Brethren, join in following my example,
And note those who walk, as you have us for a pattern. Philippians 3:17
- Brethren, join in following my example
a) The phrase “join in ” is to be noted
b) The following nuances may be detected:
i) To receive and regard Paul’s example
ii) To become like Paul in his faith and lifestyle
c) It would take careful following
d) The call is to “mimic” Paul
- The appeal is to “the brethren”
a) These are fellow-believers
b) There is a special sense of brotherhood among the Philippians
c) Brotherhood is usually characterized by a sense of oneness among the people
- Following
a) The word “following” is literally “walking”
b) This is a call to “walk” the way Paul did
c) The word “walk” is an idiom for the idea of “living”
d) What a great challenge!
- As you have us for a pattern
a) The word “pattern” is a good translation
b) Paul saw himself as a pattern for others to follow after
- The pronoun “us”
a) Paul was not alone
b) Clear examples were cited in Philippians 2
i) Timothy was praised for being a good son Philippians 2:19-24
ii) Epaphroditus was honoured for being a good brother Philippians 2:25-30
A CHALLENGE TO EMULATE GOOD EXAMPLES
Let us determine to emulate people who have lived for the Lord faithfully. Let us seek the Lord’s grace and strength to do this effectively.
