BORN OF THE WILL OF GOD

Text: John 1:10-13

THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

The Apostle Paul was not the only writer to mention the will of God with reference to salvation. The Apostle John wrote about this in his gospel.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.     John 1:10-13

  1. This text is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ
  1. In brief, John summarised what the Lord came to do

a) He was in the world

a) The world was made by Him

b) But the world did not recognize Him

b) He came to His own people (Israel)

a) But His own people did not receive Him

b) They did not own Him as their Messiah-Saviour

c) But to all who came in faith to the Lord

a) They recognised His power

b) They received Him as Saviour and Lord

c) To all who received Him

i) Salvation was given

ii) Sonship was also given

This was the amazing truth of the Gospel the Lord Jesus preached!

THE WILL OF GOD

John went on to explain how salvation and sonship came about.

  1. The word “born” was used to describe how a physical son is born:

a) Born of “blood”

i) Genealogy is to be understood

ii) But spiritual sonship does not come about by “blood”

b) Born of “the will of the flesh”

i) This speaks of natural birth

ii) But physical birth is not the same as spiritual birth

c) Born of “the will of man”

i) A physical son can be officially adopted

ii) The adopted child would bear the name of the adoptive father

  1. Born of the will of God

a) The person who receives the Lord Jesus Christ is truly blessed

b) The will of God is applied to him

i) He is born into God’s family

ii) He has been adopted spiritually

iii) He is called a son/ child of God

c) This is made possible by the decretive will of God

THE RIGHT TO BECOME CHILDREN OF GOD

This is a truly glorious Gospel truth to meditate on. This truth was taught consistently by all the Apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ. Anyone can become a child of God through receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour!

We cannot but recognize our unworthiness because of sin in our life. But through faith in the Lord Jesus, we are cleansed and He extends to us this wonderful right to become and be called “children of God!”
