FILLED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIS WILL

Text: Colossians 1

PROBLEMS IN THE COLOSSIAN CHURCH

The Apostle Paul did not found the Church in Colossae. Epaphras was probably the founding pastor and who was described as a “dear fellow servant” and “a faithful minister of Christ” (Colossians 1:7).

Epaphras realised that the problems he was facing was beyond his experience. Humbly and wisely so, he sought the help of the Apostle Paul. In his astute wisdom, Paul was able to help Epaphras address the problems in his church ( Cf. Colossians 2).

KEY PRINCIPLES

Paul worked with many key principles when he founded Churches. The following text helps us to understand some of those principles he applied.

For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy;

12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,

14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.     Colossians 1:9-14

  1. Prayer

This must always be factored in!

  1. Having a Knowledge of God’s will
  1. Walking worthy of the Lord
  1. Increasing in the knowledge of God
  1. Seeking Strength
  1. Giving thanks that we are partakers of an eternal inheritance

These six principles were consistently applied in every church ministry Paul was involved in, directly or indirectly.

OUR FOCUS: KNOWLEDGE OF GOD’S WILL

It is of great significance that we see our knowledge of God grow. It is as important that we have a deeper and clearer knowledge of His will! How may this be done?

  1. Praying

This is an important thing to do.

  1. Learning

This is something we must be committed to.

a) The lack of knowledge exposes us to false teaching

b) A strong knowledge is a great defence

  1. The Will of God

a) This is found in the Scriptures

b) Our part is to set aside time to read and to discover His will

c) The challenge is to be filled with this knowledge

i) In all wisdom

ii) In spiritual understanding     Colossians 1:9

Let us seek to deepen our knowledge of God’s Will!
