A GREAT LIGHT

Text: Isaiah 9

BEGINNING OF OUR CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

We commence a new series of pulpit messages today. This series of messages would be focusing on Christmas. Appropriately so, our focus would be on the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed,

As when at first He lightly esteemed

The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,

And afterward more heavily oppressed her,

By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,

In Galilee of the Gentiles.

The people who walked in darkness

Have seen a great light;

Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,

Upon them a light has shined.     Isaiah 9:1-2

THE GLOOM OF THE WORLD

The text of Isaiah described Israel in the time of the prophet. The key words are “gloom” and “distress.”

The situation in the world today is just as gloomy and distressful. Our problems are just as tough as in the days of Isaiah. The threat of global war, the problems associated with climate change, a pandemic that continues to threaten lives are not to be taken lightly.

THE SHADOW OF DEATH

Walking in darkness is not a great thing at any time. Darkness can be so deep, we are “in the land of the shadow of death.”

  1. There is uncertainty
  1. There is fear
  1. There is a sense of foreboding
  1. There can even be a sense of helplessness and despair

A GREAT LIGHT

Christmas is not about presents and merry-making! The Christmas message is to offer “a great light!”

  1. Light brings forth a number of things:

a) Warmth

b) Hope

c) Joy

  1. That great light is the Lord Jesus Christ

a) He came into a world of great darkness

b) But the darkness did not engulf Him

c) Instead, He brought the Light that dispelled darkness

Let us be challenged to walk in the light of the Lord Jesus Christ! Let us find a fresh sense of hope and joy in a gloomy world!
